Nighttime cases usually turn on a single question: what could the driver actually see, and when. Answering it takes more than a dark filter over a daytime scene. Headlamp output and aim, surface reflectance, retroreflective markings, ambient and fixed lighting, and the contrast between a pedestrian or object and its background all affect detection distance. We build these from scene inspection, scan data, photographs, and the retained expert's reconstruction, and where a lighting value is not established by the record we say so rather than guessing at it.
